In this investigation the influence of the addition of a percentage of diatomite on the corrosion potential of steel A615 embedded in concrete made with Portland Cement Type I and Portland Cement Extraforte ICo was evaluated. The purpose of the research was to determine the optimum percentage of diatomite that must be added in a concrete made with Type I cement and Ico extraforte cement to reduce the corrosion potential of steel embedded in concrete. The percentages of diatomite studied were 5, 10 and 20% in addition to the cement with relation to / c = 0.60, 0.65 and 0.70. We prepared pieces of 4x8 inch, which was introduced in its interior a reinforcing steel bar of 5/8 of an inch in diameter, with a length of 25cm, to assess the potential for corrosion resistance according to ASTM C876. At the same time prepared pieces of 15x30 cm for the test of resistance to the compression according to ASTM C109. The results for the ratio a / c = 0.60, manufactured with Portland Cement Type I, referring to the compression test, show an acceptable resistance to 10% addition of diatomite in the concrete structure with a resistance of 189.46 kg / cm2, similar to the mixture of 5% with 188.44 kg / cm2, the variation being less than 1%; and for the half-cell test it is shown that the results of the less negative corrosion potentials were obtained with the addition of 10% of diatomite after 14 days of drying. And for the mixture made with Cement portland Ico, referring to the compression test, show an acceptable resistance to 10% of addition of diatomite in the concrete structure with a resistance of 184.59 kg / cm2, similar to the mixture of 5% with 183.86 kg / cm2, the variation being less than 1%; and for the half-cell test it is shown that the results of the less negative corrosion potentials were obtained with the addition of 10% of diatomite after 14 and 28 days of drying, however the percentage of 5% addition has good results. For the ratio a / c = 0.65, manufactured with Portland Cement Type I, referring to the compression test, they show an acceptable resistance to 5% addition of diatomite in the concrete structure with a resistance of 172.96 kg / cm2, similar to the mixture of 10% with 172.56 kg / cm2, the variation being less than 1%; and for the half-cell test it is shown that the results of the less negative corrosion potentials were obtained with the addition of 5%
