Objective: This study aimed to investigate the association between preeclampsia and necrotizing enterocolitis in preterm infants of low birth weight. Material and methods: This was an analytic, observational, retrospective case-control study at Hospital Belen de Trujillo in period 2010-2015. The study population consisted of 198 preterm infants of low birth weight; who were divided into 2 groups: with and without necrotizing enterocolitis. Sixty six were cases and 132 were in the control group. Results: The frequency of preeclampsia in preterm infants with necrotizing enterocolitis was 41% (n=27). The preeclampsia in preterm infants without necrotizing enterocolitis was 14% (n=19). Preeclampsia is a risk factor for necrotizing enterocolitis with an odds ratio of 4,11 (IC 95%: 2,06 - 8,21) which was significative. In multiple logistic regression analysis, preeclampsia was found to be predictive of NEC (OR: 3,38; IC 95%: 1,67 - 6,85). Conclusions: Preeclampsia is an independent associated factor for development necrotizing enterocolitis in preterm infants of low birth weight.
