OBJECTIVE: To determine if thrombocytopenia is a factor associated with high variceal gastrointestinal bleeding in cirrhotic patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Patients diagnosed with hepatic cirrhosis hospitalized at the Peru-Korea II-2 Santa Rosa Hospital of the Hospital de la Amistad. MINSA, Piura. Because the population taken in the years studied is not very large is taken as a sample the general population. RESULTS: 70% of the patients studied resulted in variceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding with a diagnosis of cirrhosis of the liver. When determining the proportion of patients with thrombocytopenia diagnosed with hepatic cirrhosis who presented variceal HDA, 71.43% had thrombocytopenia, as opposed to 46.30% of patients with thrombocytopenia who did not present variceal HDA. A p: 0.001, an adjusted OR of 11.800 with IC95% 3.354-41.510 were obtained, demonstrating the statistically significant association between the patients with thrombocytopenia diagnosed with liver cirrhosis and variceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding. CONCLUSIONS: Thrombocytopenia is a factor associated with high variceal gastrointestinal bleeding in cirrhotic patients. Patients with thrombocytopenia with a diagnosis of hepatic cirrhosis are 11.800 times more likely to present variceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding than patients who do not have thrombocytopenia.
