To determine the association between prematurity and maternal age in the January-December 2014 Tumbes Regional Hospital II-2, period. Material and methods: an analytical study, transversal, observational, retrospective was performed. 331 medical records of live births, randomly selected were reviewed, taking into account the criteria of inclusion and exclusion. Maternal age group (<19 years, B: 19-34 years, C: A ≥35 years) was divided to determine association between prematurity and maternal age; Odds Ratio (OR) and confidence intervals (95% CI) using Chi Square test was calculated. Results: Prevalence of prematurity of 7.25% was found; A higher prevalence of prematurity ≥ 35 years (9.38%) 7.79% between 19-34 years and 3.64% at <19 years; The mean maternal age was 27.75 ± preterm 6.85, a median of 28.50, with an interquartile range of 23-33 years. In term infants, the average was 25.05 ± 6.66, 24.00 median and interquartile range 20-30. A value of p = 0.75 was obtained, OR: 1.20 in ≥ 35 years and p = 0.30, OR 0.47 to <19 years. Conclusion: The prevalence of prematurity was 7.25%. The prevalence of prematurity, according to maternal age was higher in patients aged ≥ 35 years (9.38%), an 7.79% in patients aged 19-34 years and a lower prevalence in patients younger than 19 years (3.64%). The characteristics of maternal age in preterm children was 27.75 ± 6.85 average, a median of 28.50, with an interquartile range of 23-33 years, and maternal age in term infants, the mean was 25.05, with a standard deviation of ± 6.66, 24.00 and median interquartile range 20-30. There is a sufficient strong statistical association between prematurity and maternal age.
