OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between acute kidney injury and mortality in patients with acute coronary syndrome of the Specialties Medicine Service of Hospital III José Cayetano Heredia EsSalud Piura during the 2014-2017 period. MATERIAL AND METHOD: An observational, retrospective, analytical type case and control study was conducted. With a population of 254 patients, of which 211 met the selection criteria. The sample of the study population consisted of 30 cases and 60 controls. RESULTS: In relation to age, 67 years were taken as the cut-off point. Of the 30 cases, 20 patients (66.7%) were older than or equal to 67 years; and 10 (33.3%) had an age lower than 67. In the sex, 19 cases (63.3%) were males and 11 cases (36.7%) were females; the controls were distributed in 47 (78.3%) males and 13 (21.7%) females. In relation to diabetes mellitus, the study found 44 patients had it. Of the 30 cases, 16 patients (53.3%) had DM; and 28 (46.7%) of the 60 controls. In relation to arterial hypertension, the study found 44 patients suffered from it. Of the 30 cases, 19 patients (63.3%) had hypertension; and 25 (41.6%) of the 60 controls. In relation to STEIM, in 21 cases (70%) and in controls, 38 (63.3%) were found and, for NSTEIM, 9 patients (30%) were found in patients with AKI, similar to the controls of 22 (36.7%). Mortality in the patients was 0.6%, with an ORC of 4. 50% of the patients who suffered from AKI died 10 days after hospitalization. CONCLUSIONS: Having ≥67 years increases the risk of developing AKI in patients with ACS by 5.9. Of patients with ACS, those who have AKI have 4 times the risk of dying compared to patients who do not have it develop. Survival at 10 days in coronary patients who presented AKI is 50%.
