Purpose: To determine which factors are associated to present intestinal obstruction by flanges and adhesions in postoperative patients. Material and methods: Retrospective population cases and controls based on clinical histories and operative reports of postoperative patients with intestinal obstruction due to flanges and adhesions, who entered the Regional Teaching Hospital of Trujillo in the period January 2012 to December 2017. Conducting a univariate study and multivariate, in addition using the Chi square test (x2) and the Fisher exact test, variables intestinal obstruction by flanges and adhesions were analyzed in postoperative patients, with a 95% CI. In addition, the degree of significance was established for the presence of intestinal obstruction by flanges and adhesions of the variables: age, sex, type of surgery, approach technique, peritoneal lavage, suture of peritoneum, use of drains and number of previous surgeries. Results: Age <50 years (OR = 1.79, p <0.05, 95% CI: 1.20-2.66), male sex (OR = 2.70, p <0.05, 95% CI: 1.30 -5.57), and previous surgeries (OR = 2.93, p <0.05, 95% CI: 1.28-6.70), are associated factors that increase the risk of intestinal obstruction due to flanges and adhesions in patients postoperative compared to postoperative patients without intestinal obstruction. Conclusion: Age <50 years, male sex and previous surgeries are associated factors that increase the risk in postoperative patients of presenting intestinal obstruction due to flanges and adhesions.
