To determine whether premature rupture of membranes is a risk factor for hyperbilirubinemia in newborns treated at the Belen Hospital of Trujillo during the period 2012-2014. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective observational, analytical, case-control study with a sample size of 162 medical records of newborns with hyperbilirubinemia diagnosed with maternal history of premature rupture of membranes, distributed as cases (54 newborns hyperbilirubinemia) and controls (108 newborns without hyperbilirubinemia). RESULTS: Regarding the sex of newborns have that in the group of cases, 44.4% (24) were male and 55.6% (30), female. And in the group of controls 48.1% (52) were male and 51.9% (56), female. The frequency of newborns with hyperbilirubinemia which had the maternal history RPM was 16 (30%) and 38 (70%) who did not have. In newborns without hyperbilirubinemia which had the maternal history RPM was 31 (28.7%) and 77 (71.3%) who did not have. For the statistical evaluation of the hypothesis, the non-parametric test, Chi Square, was used with a significance level of 5%; determined that there is no significant relationship between hyperbilirubinemia and maternal history of RPM in neonates after calculate a X2 of 0.15. CONLUSIONS: The maternal history of premature rupture of membranes is not a risk factor for neonatal hyperbilirubinemia.
