Objective: To determine if excessive daytime sleepiness (SDE) is associated with inadequate academic performance in medical students. Material and Methods: Observational, analytical, cross-sectional study in 153 students, enrolled in the eleventh cycle of the Faculty of Human Medicine at Universidad Privada Antenor Orrego during the period 2016 - 2, who fulfilled the selection criteria. Results: In the univariate and multivariate analysis we found a highly significant dependence (p = 0.0000805), between the excessive daytime sleepiness level and academic performance. Female gender predominated with 65% (22) in students with inadequate academic performance and 51% (60) in students with adequate academic performance. The average age was 25.97 ± 2.21 years in students with inadequate academic performance and 25.61 ± 1.66 in students with adequate academic performance. The study time for the group of inadequate academic performance was 5.24 ± 1.33 hours, and for the adequate academic performance was 4.99 ± 1.55 hours. In addition, 43% of students with adequate academic performance had excessive daytime sleepiness compared to those with inadequate academic performance that was 97%; It was also observed that students with adequate academic performance 57% presented non-excessive daytime sleepiness compared to 3% of the group with inadequate academic performance. Conclusions: Excessive daytime sleepiness is associated with inadequate academic performance in medical students.
