Introduction: Burnout Syndrome is defined as ““a response to chronic work stress, integrated by negative attitudes and feelings towards the people with whom one works and towards one's professional role. This response often occurs in healthcare professionals. The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) has been the most widely used instrument by the research community for the evaluation of Burnout syndrome. It evaluates, through 22 items, the three central variables: exhaustion, depersonalization and low professional efficiency. Objective: To identify that correlation exists between the academic year and the level of Burnout syndrome in medical residents of Hospital Belén De Trujillo. Methods: Observational, transverse and correlational. A total of 63 resident physicians of the Hospital Belén de Trujillo were surveyed in 2017 and the MBI survey was applied. The total score obtained was classified according to the levels of Burnout Syndrome and later the statistical analysis was performed. Results: The average age of resident physicians was 31.6 years. Of the total, 57.1% had SB, by gender it was found that 58.8% of men had SB; of married residents 75% obtained a SB-compatible score. It was observed that SB was present mostly in internal medicine, surgery and pediatrics. The 62.4% of first year residents had SB. According to the specialty, it was observed that residents of internal medicine and surgery had higher SB levels (47 and 54%, respectively). In the first year of medical residency, 54% had high SB, similar to the 60% obtained in the third-year resident group. No direct correlation was found between the year of residence and the SB level. Conclusión: There is no correlation between the academic year and the level of Burnout syndrome in medical residents of Hospital Belén De Trujillo during the period February - March, 2017.
