To determine the length of stay, death and the time of resolution of diabetic ketoacidosis in relation with the use of bicarbonate in pH > 6.9. Methods: A descriptive, observational, retrospective and cross sectional study. The study population consisted on 80 medical records of patients of the emergency area between January of 2009 and December of 2016. Results: The average of age of the 80 patients was 42.05±13.7, the female gender includes the 52.5 % (42 patients); bicarbonate was used in 59.0 % (47 cases). Using bicarbonate the length of stay was between from 2 to 16 and from 3 to 11 when it wasn’t used. The average of length stay was 7.11±2.77 and 6.42±2.16 days with and without use of bicarbonate respectively, without significant statistics difference (p=0.235); the frequency of death was 0% in both groups. The time of resolution of DKA involved from 0.5 to 4 days in the bicarbonate group and from 0.5 to 6 without its use and without significant statistics difference (p=0.750). Conclusions: The use of bicarbonate didn’t show superiority against the expectant management in the length of stay, death and time of resolution in the DKA. It constitutes an alternative for the management of DKA that depends on the experience and criterion of each doctor.
