OBJECTIVE: To determine if the low pregestational weight is a risk factor for intrauterine growth restriction in pregnant women attended at the Hospital Regional Docente de Trujillo. MATERIAL Y METHODS: An analytical, observational, retrospective, case-control study, which evaluated 255 clinical stories of the pregnant-newborn binomial, which were divided into two groups: 85 pregnant women with newborns with intrauterine growth restriction, and the controls: 170 pregnant women with newborns without intrauterine growth restriction, both groups attended at the Hospital Regional Docente de Trujillo from January 2010 - December 2014. RESULTS: The frequency of low pregestational weight in pregnant women with intrauterine growth restriction was 41.2%, and of the pregnant women with newborns without intrauterine growth restriction was 17.6%. Low pregestational weight is a risk factor for intrauterine growth restriction with OR = 3.3 (95% CI: 1.8 - 5.9) and have a statistically significant association (p <0.01). The mean body mass index was significantly lower (p <0.01) in the group of pregnant women with intrauterine growth restriction compared to the group with newborns without intrauterine growth restriction. CONCLUSIONS: Low pregestational weight is a risk factor for intrauterine growth restriction in pregnant women attended at the Hospital Regional Docente de Trujillo.
