In order to determine the adverse effects of highly active antiretroviral therapy in infants born to mothers with HIV-infected before pregnancy historical cohort study in which two groups of medical records of infants studied was performed. One consists of infants born to mothers with HIV before pregnancy and who received HAART and the other negative mothers of newborns treated at the Regional Teaching Hospital of Trujillo between 2007 and 2014. For statistical analysis, Chi test was used square, setting the significance level P <0.05. It was found that the frequency of low birth weight in newborns of mothers with and without highly active antiretroviral therapy was 0% and 8.1% respectively (P> 0.05). The frequency of prematurity was 2.7% and 8.1% among newborns of mothers with and without highly active antiretroviral treatment (P> 0.05). The frequency of intrauterine growth was 0% in newborns of mothers who received HAART and 8.1% in newborns of mothers without this treatment. The frequency of anemia in newborns of mothers with and without highly active antiretroviral therapy was 48.6% and 10.8% respectively (P <0.001). 2.7% of infants born to mothers with highly active antiretroviral therapy had thrombocytopenia compared to any newborn mothers without HAART treatment. (P> 0.05). No infants of mothers with and without highly active antiretroviral therapy had stillbirth, neonatal death and post neonatal death. Concluding that the highly active antiretroviral treatment conditions anemia in the newborn of mothers with HIV-infected before pregnancy (P <0.001).
