To assess whether hyponatremia is a risk factor for hip fracture in elderly patients at Regional Hospital of Trujillo during the period January 2010 to December 2014. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted an observational, analytical, case-control, which evaluated 186 elderly patients, which were distributed in cases (62 patients with hip fracture) and controls (124 patients without hip fracture) study. RESULTS: The mean age in the case group was 79.44 ± 8.38 years and related to the control patients was 75.48 ± 8.43 years (p < 0.01); the proportion of males was 29.03% cases and controls was 36.29% (p > 0.05). The mean serum sodium for admission to the group of cases and controls were 138.05 ± 4.15 and 139.50 ± 3.45 respectively (p < 0.05); to categorize the cutoff sodium 135 mEq / L, had to the proportion of hyponatremia in the case group was 14,52% and in the control group was 4,03% (p < 0.05); obtaining an OR = 4,08 with 95% CI [1,30 to 12,74]. CONCLUSIONS: The hyponatremia proved to be a risk factor for hip fracture.
