OBJECTIVES: To determinee if depression and distress related to diabetes are risk factors of poor metabolic control in adults with diabetes mellitus type 2. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A case-control study in the Albrecht Hospital I of ESSALUD Trujillo, 322 adults with diabetes mellitus 2, which were studied 55/63 were cases with depression/distress. RESULTS: The prevalence of depression was 17% (55/322) and distress related to the diabetes mellitus 19.56% (63/322). Depression increases the risk of poor metabolic control but not significantly (56.4% vs. 56.2%) OR=1.008 (IC 0.561- 1.809) p=0.551. Distress related to diabetes significantly increases the risk of poor metabolic control (61.9% vs. 54.8%) OR=1.339 (IC 0.762-2.354) p=0.191. The degree of depression does not influence on the presence of poor control metabolic mild depression p=0.265; moderate p=0.149. Dimension that influence significantly in the distress ratio-bad metabolic control are the emotional (p=0.042). CONCLUSIONS: Diabetes related distress is risk factor for bad metabolic control; depression increases the risk of poor metabolic control but not significantly.
