OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to compare the effect of chewing gum without xylitol on salivary ph. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This double-blind controlled trial was performed in 20 volunteers aged 20 - 25 years old, with a minimum of 2 cavities of II degree, absence of periodontal disease, prosthesis or orthodontics. They were divided into two equal groups. Saliva samples were collected before consumption of chewing gums and salivary pH was made, recording data reference. Subsequently, a group was asked to chew a chewing gum with xylitol 60.5% (1 g) and the other, a chewing gum without xylitol, 5 minutes, once a day, for 3 days. Saliva samples were collected at 24, 48 and 72 hours to proceed to measure salivary pH. RESULTS: Regarding the results we can determine that chewing gum with xylitol produced a significant increase in the level of salivary pH at 24, 48 and 72 hours relative to the gum without xylitol ( p <0.001).CONCLUSION: Chewing gum with xylitol showed statistically significant increase in salivary pH compared to xylitol chewing gum.
