To determine the association between periodontitis and preeclampsia in pregnant women at the Belen Hospital of Trujillo during 2012-2014. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An analytical retrospective case-control study was conducted. Case group: 33 pregnant patients with preeclampsia and control groups: 99 pregnant patients without preeclampsia, both groups were treated at the Belen Hospital of Trujillo during 2012 - 2014. The information of each patient obtained of the clinical history was included in a clinical records (demographics, clinical findings, laboratory tests). Descriptive and analytical statistics was utilized to process the data. The calculation of the odds ratio determined the strength of association of periodontitis for preeclampsia, p value <0.05. RESULTS: In the preeclamptic patients the mean age was 23 years and the mean gestational age of 37.7 weeks; while in the control group the mean age was 22 years and mean gestational age of 38.5 weeks. The frequency of periodontitis was higher in preeclamptic patients than in controls (42% vs. 20%). The OR was 2.91, p <0.05. CONCLUSIONS: Periodontitis increases 2.9 times the risk of developing preeclampsia. The frequency of periodontitis is significantly higher in pregnant women with preeclampsia than without preeclampsia. The severity of periodontitis has a direct relationship to the severity of preeclampsia.
