Introduction: Spontaneous preterm birth is one of the leading causes of perinatal mortality and long-term morbidity, as well as the long-term consequences for health and cognitive outcomes. Objective: To demonstrate that maternal anemia is a risk factor associated with spontaneous preterm delivery in pregnant women at Hospital Belén de Trujillo. Materials and methods: An observational and analytical study of cases and controls was carried out, including 236 pregnant women attended at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Service of the Hospital Belén de Trujillo during the period July – December 2015, which were divided equally and randomly according to the gestational age, in a Group of cases (with preterm delivery) and another of controls (with term delivery). From which data were collected for age, parity, origin and level of education, in addition to whether or not they had anemia; these variables were analyzed by Student's T or Odds Ratio (OR) calculation. Results: There were no significant differences between groups of cases and controls for age, parity, provenance and maternal education (p> 0.05). Maternal anemia increased the risk of spontaneous preterm delivery by 3.42 times, moderate anemia by 3.04 times, and severe by 3.65 times (p <0.05).Conclusion: Maternal anemia is a risk factor associated with spontaneous preterm delivery in pregnant women at Hospital Belén de Trujillo.
