Objective: To determinate whether there is an association between altered bone mineral density and severity of pelvic organ prolapse in postmenopausal women at the Hospital Belén de Trujillo. Material and Methods: An analytical, observational, retrospective, cross sectional study was carried out. The study population consisted of 146 female patients older than 40 years; Which were divided into 2 groups: prolapse of pelvic organs categories II - IV or I - II; The odds ratio and chi-square test were calculated. Results: The frequency of alterations of bone mineral density in postmenopausal women with prolapse of pelvic organs grade III and IV was: osteporosis (21%); Osteopenia (19%) and normal (60%). The frequency of alterations in bone mineral density in postmenopausal women with prolapse of pelvic organs grade I and II was: osteporosis (4%); Osteopenia (17%) and normal (79%). Osteoporosis is a risk factor associated with severity of pelvic organ prolapse in postmenopausal women with an odds ratio of 7.24 which was significant (p <0.05). Conclusions: There is an association between altered bone mineral density and severity of pelvic organ prolapse in postmenopausal women at the Hospital Belén de Trujillo.
