OBJECTIVE: Show that the gender, no religion, absence of spouse, higher education, physical comorbidity, psychiatric comorbidity and family history of suicide risk factors are associated with suicidal ideation in elderly patients with major depressive disorder in Trujillo Regional Teaching Hospital. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective study of cases and controls in the elderly patient with depressive disorder was made mayor; 14 cases and 28 controls, with the cases who presented Controls suicidal ideation and those who had not. RESULTS: a majority of women (71%) in elderly patients with major depressive disorder, with equal proportions in elderly patients with presence of suicidal ideation (64%) and in the absence of suicidal ideation (75%), also can be seen can be seen most elderly if They profess a religion (90%) in elderly patients with major depressive disorder, as in the elderly with the presence of suicidal ideation (93%) and in the absence of suicidal ideation (89%); plus a majority of elderly living with their spouse (57%) in elderly patients with major depressive disorder, excelling in elderly patients with no suicidal ideation (71%) and a majority of elderly with no spouse in those with suicidal ideation (71 %); Also a majority of elderly people without higher education (52%), as in the elderly with the presence of suicidal ideation (57%) and in the absence of suicidal ideation (50%) is observed; while a majority of elderly with 1 or 2 comorbidities (74%), being a smaller number of comorbidities in the elderly without suicidal ideation (86%) was found; simultaneously a greater percentage of elderly people without psychiatric comorbidity was observed (98%) and in the same way in elderly (93%) and without (100%) suicidal ideation; finally a majority of elderly people without family history of suicide was evident, however a high percentage of elderly who have no family history of suicide in those who have not presented suicidal ideation found CONCLUSIONS: The absence of spouse, family history of suicide, physical comorbidity, are risk factors for suicidal ideation in elderly patients with major depressive disorder, with statistical significance is established. In addition, no significant association between gender, religious affiliation, college and psychiatric comorbidity with suicidal ideation in elderly patients with major depressive disorder.
