Objective: To determine whether neonatal hypoglycemia is a risk factor for childhood epilepsy in children attended at the Hospital Belén de Trujillo. Material and method: An analytical, observational, retrospective, case-control study has been conducted. The study population consisted of 188 children in two groups: with and without a diagnosis of childhood epilepsy, corresponding to 19 and 169, respectively, for each case, 9 controls were taken, all of whom attended the Hospital Belén de Trujillo in the period from January 2011 to December 2016. Results: Of 188 pediatric patients, the average age of children with Epilepsy is 4 years, ranging from 1 year to 10 years, with a median of 3 years, with 3 years being the mode, in addition, the average age without Epilepsy Infant is 2 years old having a range of ages from 1 year to 13 years, with a median of 1 year, being also 1 year mode. The frequency of male sex in the infantile epilepsy group was 47.37% while the female patients in the infantile epilepsy group was 52.63%. The frequency of neonatal hypoglycemia in the infantile epilepsy group was 31.58%, while in the group without infantile epilepsy it was 11.83%. (OR: 3.44; IC 95 %( 1.23 – 9.60); P < 0.05), (x 2 :5.59; P < 0.02), (Yates Correction: 4.05; P < 0.04), (Fisher Exact Test; P<0.03). Conclusions: Neonatal hypoglycemia is a risk factor for childhood epilepsy at Hospital Belén de Trujillo.
