OBJECTIVES : To determine whether excessive consumption of soft drinks is a factor associated with obesity in adolescents 11 to 18 years. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Using a case-control study nested in schools Brüning and Fleming of Trujillo; 245 adolescents, were studied 45.71% of female sex, of which 42 were obese (cases) and 203 without obesity (controls) RESULTS: The regular consumption of soft drinks was of 71.42% (175/245) and excessive consumption of soft drinks was 30.61% (75/245). The 37.33% of adolescents with excessive consumption of soft drinks (CEG) showed obesity compared with 8.2% of those who did not have CEG. The CEG was risk factor for obesity with an OR = 6. 368(IC 95% 3.252-13.634) p < 0.01. 21.4% of adolescents with regular consumption of soft drinks (CRG) showed obesity compared with the 7.14% of those who did not have CRG The CRG was a risk factor for obesity with an OR = 1 296 (1.120-1,499) p < 0.05. Very few adolescents consume diet sodas, the risk of obesity by this consumption was not significant. It were association of excessive consumption of soft drinks with risk of obesity in adolescents according to age, being the lower protective age for presentation of obesity OR = 0 619, p < 0.01,the association of excessive consumption of soft drinks with risk of obesity and teen sex being male OR = 9 42 risk factor, p < 0.01...
