OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the coping strategies to death are protective factor to anxiety in healthcare professionals of critical care units and emergency unit in Trujillo Regional Teaching Hospital. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective control-case study was designed in healthcare professionals; 35 cases and 35 controls, therefore the case were professionals who had anxiety according to Anxiety of death test and the controls who didn´t have anxiety. The assignment of the exposure was realized by Bugen's test of coping to death. Data was analyzed by U of Mann-Whitney and H of Kruskal Wallis test. RESULTS: The mean age for case group was 20-39 years and control group was 40-64 years (p < 0,01); about the service of study group, healthcare professionals of emergency unit was present in 66 % and healthcare professionals of critical care units 51% in case group and control group, respectively (p > 0,05). Concerning about the employment situation was contracted in case group and was appointed in control group (p < 0, 01). The length of service was 9 years in case group and 10-35 years in control group (p < 0,05).With regard to Bugen´s test of coping to death , good coping occurred in 46% and for bad coping in 54% (p > 0,05); by categorizing the Bugen´s test of coping to death with the anxiety was present in 54% in case group and control group in 36% (p>0,05); obtaining a RR = 0,50 95% CI [0.19 to 1.29]. CONCLUSIONS: To established that the coping strategies to death haven´t protective effect to anxiety in healthcare professionals of critical care units and emergency unit.
