To determine the factors associated with accidental exposures to blood and biological fluids in medical interns at hospitals Belén, Regional Docente and Víctor Lazarte Echegaray de Trujillo during the months of January to February, 2017. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An observational, analytical, cross-sectional study was carried out, which evaluated 126 medical interns who are currently working in one of the hospitals mentioned. RESULTS: The prevalence of exposure to blood or body fluids in medical interns was 57.94%. The mean age for group I was 26.21 ± 2.99 years and for group II was 25.55 ± 2.93 (p > 0.05); 50.68% and 45.28% of groups I and II respectively, were male (p < 0.05); the 63.01% of the medical interns in group I came from private universities and in group II 75.47% of them (p > 0.05). The pre- internship training on Biosafety was performed in group I in 98.63% and in group II in 100% (p > 0.05). Regarding exposure to blood and body fluids at some time in their lives, it was observed that in group I, 31.51% and in group II, 26.42% were exposed (p > 0.05). With regard to the measures taken after exposure to blood or body fluids, it was observed that the medical interns performed washing with soap and water in 49.32%, washing with iodine or alcohol solution 95.89%, doing the Test for HIV in 28.77%, seek post-exposure prophylaxis 10.96% and other actions 28.77%. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of exposure to blood and body fluids in medical interns is high.
