Objective: To determine if advanced paternal age is associated with the onset of schizophrenia in patients treated at Hospital Víctor Lazarte Echegaray. Material and Methods: An analytical, observational, retrospective, case-control study was conducted. The study population consisted of 126 adult patients; who were divided into 2 groups: with schizophrenia and without schizophrenia. Results: The frequency of advanced paternal age in patients with schizophrenia was 42%. The frequency of advanced paternal age in patients without schizophrenia was 24%. Advanced paternal age is a factor associated with schizophrenia with an Odds Ratio of 2.24 which was significant (p <0.05). Mean paternal age was significantly higher in patients with schizophrenia than in patients without schizophrenia (p <0.05). Conclusions: Advanced paternal age has an association with the onset of schizophrenia in patients treated at Hospital Víctor Lazarte Echegaray.
