Objective. To determinate the validity of ultrasound in the diagnosis of fetal macrosomia in pregnant women at term of Victor Lazarte Echegaray Hospital IV attended in the period January to December 2011. Material and Methods. This observational, analytical, retrospective diagnostic tests analyzed data from a consecutive series of 125 pregnant women at term with ultrasonographic diagnosis of fetal macrosomia in HVLE attended in the period January to December 2011. Results. The sensitivity and specificity of ultrasound was 44% (CI 95%: 32% - 57%) and 70% (CI 95%: 59% - 82%) respectively. The positive and negative predictive value was 59% (CI 95%: 44% - 73%) and 57% (CI 95%: 46% - 68%) respectively. With respect to likelihood ratios, the positive likelihood ratio and negative were 1.49 (95% CI: 0.93 -2.38) and 0.79 (95% CI: 0.60 -1.04) respectively. There was no association between ultrasound and macrosomia observed in the newborn (p = 0.091). In this study, the area under the curve COR obtained is 0.642 (95% CI: 0,546 to 0.739) with statistically significant difference (p = 0.006) Conclusions. Ultrasound is a test that can get to discriminate well, but its diagnostic impact is still low.
