To establish whether the metabolic syndrome is a risk factor for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in Victor Lazarte Echegaray hospital of Trujillo during the period January 2010 to December 2014. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted an observational, analytical, case-control study evaluating 144 patients ≥ 40 years of age, which were divided into two groups, the group of cases 48 patients with BPH and the controls 96 patients without BPH. RESULTS: The mean age of cases and controls was 69,52 ± 11,91 and 64,2 ± 13,40 years (p < 0,05); the mean waist circumference in cases and controls was 106,17 ± 17,24 cm and 97,23 ± 12,62 cm respectively (p < 0,01). The means of triglycerides and HDL cholesterol was 211,38 cases and 38,98 ± 67,84 ± 2,66 respectively and controls was 196,7 ± 140,80 ± 10,28 and 42 respectively (p > 0,05; p < 0,05 respectively). With regard to the presence of hypertension and type 2 DM was observed that in the case group were present in 25% and 20,83% respectively in the control group were present at 9,38% and 8,33% respectively (p < 0,05; p <0,05 respectively). With regard to the presence of metabolic syndrome in the group of cases and controls was observed that this condition was present in the case group and 27,08% in the control group was 10,42% (p < 0,05). CONCLUSIONS: There were significantly more chronic disease and metabolic syndrome in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia.
