To determine the hearing loss sensorineural by treatment with antimalarial drugs in adults with rheumatic diseases. Design: Case- control. Analitic. Setting: Albrecht’Hospital Trujillo.Perú. Subjects: 129 rheumatic patients; 43 with hearing loss sensorineural (cases) and 86 within hearing loss(control) . Main outcome measures: prevalence and severity of hearing loss sensorineural in patients. Results: The prevalence of hearing loss sensorineural (HNS) was of 42.22% in group cases compared to 28.57% in the control group; the use of antimalarial drugs was risk factor of 1,827 HNS Odds Ratio (95% CI 1,256-3,897) p = 0.046 which is less than 0.05.The 51.16% of cases had moderate degree of hipoacusia, 46.5% grade mild and only the 2.32% (1 case) had severe hearing loss. The average number of years of treatment with antimalarial drugs in the group with HNS (cases) is 4.74 of = 2,130 years compared with 2.68 years of = 1.676 in the group without HNS (controls). The mean difference is significant p = 0.01, which indicates that the number of years of treatment with antimalarial drugs significantly influence the presentation of HNS in rheumatologic patients. The number of years of treatment correlates of direct and meaningful way with the severity of the HNS coefficient T Kendall 0.41, P = 0.000. Conclusiones: These results confirm the increase in the risk of sensorineural hearing loss by treatment with antimalarials in rheumatologic patients.
