To assess whether cesarean in labor is a protective factor for placenta previa. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted an observational, analytical, case-control study, which evaluated 222 pregnant women with previous cesarean section, divided into two groups (74 patients with placenta previa and 148 patients without this condition), all served in the Department of Obstetrics Regional Teaching Hospital Trujillo during the period January 2001 to December 2014. RESULTS: The mean age of patients in the group of cases was 29.97 ± 6.09 years and the control patients was 29.11 ± 5.89 years (p > 0.05); with respect to gestational age at delivery, we observed that mean in the case group was 37.74 ± 1.09 weeks and the control group was 38.14 ± 1.44 weeks (p < 0.05 ). With regard to the relationship between the time of caesarean section in the first pregnancy and the presence of placenta previa in the second pregnancy, it was observed that in the case group was 33.78% the prior cesarean during labor and control 65.54% of them (p < 0.001) group; with an OR = 0.27 95% CI [0.15-.48]. CONCLUSIONS: The previous cesarean during labor proved to be a protective factor for the development of placenta previa for the second pregnancy.
