To determine whether maternal preeclampsia is a risk factor for developing bronchopulmonary dysplasia in preterm infants in the Neonatal Service Victor Lazarte Echegaray Hospital of Trujillo, in the period 2005-2011. Material and methods. Case-control study that analyzed data from a series of 132 patient records preterm infants. Were grouped into: a) Cases (n = 44): Infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia b) Controls (n = 88): Infants without bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Results. We found that exposure to maternal preeclampsia was a highly significant risk factor (p = 0,002) with an OR of 4,017 and confidence intervals at 95% 1,66 – 9,69. Besides gestational age ≤ 28 weeks was a highly significant risk factor (p = 0,018) with an OR of 6,87 and confidence intervals at 95% 1,39 – 33,75. Other variables such as birth weight ≤ 1000 g, male sex, were not risk factors at the time of evaluation. Most patients with preeclampsia exposure and subsequent development of BPD had a higher frequency of exposure to severe maternal preeclampsia (69,57%). Conclusions. Preeclampsia is a risk factor for development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia in preterm infants so their management should be prioritized and monitored carefully.
