Objective: To determine whether pre eclampsia is a risk factor associated with the development of dental caries in children 3-5 years old. Material and methods: We conducted an observational, analytical, case- control, which evaluated 450 children between 3-5 years of age divided into two groups (case group: 150 children with dental caries and control group: 300 children without dental caries) study; all enrolled in educational institutions in the district of La Esperanza, during November and December 2014. Results: The mean age of children in the case group was 4.08 ± 0.86 years and the control group was 3.92 ± 0.89 years (p > 0.05); the proportion of males in the case and control groups were 48% and 44.67% respectively (p > 0.05). In relation to birth weight, mean in the case group was 3032.72 ± 453.91 grams and in the control group was 3041.87 ± 359.67 grams (p > 0.05). Regarding the history of pre-term birth was observed that the ratio corresponding to the case-control children were 10% and 3.67% respectively (p < 0.01) and in relation to the history of pre- eclampsia in the mother noted that the ratio corresponding to the case- control children were 8% and 3% respectively (p < 0.05) with an OR = 2.92 95% CI [1.31 to 6.53]. Conclusions: The maternal history of preeclampsia was found to be a risk factor for dental caries in children aged 3-5 years old.
