Objective: To determine the prevalence of Peripheral Arterial Disease (EAP) in patients with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus hospitalized at the José Cayetano Heredia Regional Hospital in Piura in 2019. Methodology: The present study is a cross-sectional, analytical, prospective, observational study, which was carried out with 100 diabetic patients, attended the emergency surgery and internal medicine service of the Regional Hospital José Cayetano Heredia during the year 2019, to whom the measurement of the ankle-arm index (ABI) was performed, using a portable 5 to 10Mhz doppler device and a handheld Riester cuff sphygmomanometer for adults. Results: Of the 100 participants in this study, a significant prevalence of CSS was obtained (42%) by ITB < 0.9, and 6% of the patients had ABI < 0.5 or critical lower limb ischemia. 50% of women and 34.6% of men had EAP (p=0.119, CI=95%). and mean age was 66.1 12.3 vs. 63.1 15.1 years for patients with and without EAP respectively (p=0.077, CI=95%). The time of evolution of diabetes has been highly significant of 17.4 11.4 years for patients with PSA (OR: 1.03, p=0.001, CI=95%). The following cardiovascular risk factors were associated with ABI < 0.9: hypertension (54.2%, p=0.018), chronic kidney disease (70%, p=0.005), dyslipidemia (66.7%, p=<0.001) and sedentarism (51.8%, p = 0.031). Conclusion: PAD is a frequent complication in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus in our environment. Age and sex are not factors that influence the appearance of low ABI, but the time of evolution of diabetes. The cardiovascular risk factors associated with PAD in diabetic patients are: arterial hypertension, chronic kidney disease, dyslipidemia and sedentary lifestyle. These are data that are corroborated in the literature reviewed, but more studies are needed to establish the prevalence of low ABI in high populations.
