The objective was to determine the relationship between the level of knowledge about self-care and the status of the vascular access of patients on hemodialysis at the Instituto Nefrológico del Norte Chiclayo - 2019. The research was applied, quantitative, correlational and with a non-experimental cross-sectional design; had a sample of 42 patients on hemodialysis with a catheter and 61 with a fistula to whom a previously validated questionnaire and checklist were applied to measure the knowledge and current status of vascular access according to their type of device. Most were between 32-42 years of age (31%), were female (61.9%), were married (50%), had a high school level (47.6%) and were mistresses from home (45.2%). The level of knowledge about self-care of vascular access in fistula and catheter was medium in 42.6% and 40.5%, respectively. The condition of the vascular access in fistula and catheter was poor in 68.8% and 57.1%, respectively. A level of significance greater than 0.05 was obtained between the level of knowledge and the status of the vascular access both in fistula and catheter. Concluding that there is no significant relationship between the level of knowledge about self-care and the status of the vascular access of patients on hemodialysis
