OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine whether non-exclusive breastfeeding is a risk factor for psychomotor development disorder in children under 15 months of age seen at Belén Hospital in Trujillo during the period 2016-2022. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An observational, analytical, retrospective case-control study was conducted. The medical records of 250 children under 15 months of age seen in the outpatient Growth and Development Control for Girls and Boys (CRED) clinics at Belén Hospital in Trujillo between 2016-2022 were analyzed. A total of 125 children with psychomotor development disorders (cases) and 125 children without psychomotor development disorders (controls) were selected using predefined criteria and simple random probability sampling. Diagnoses were determined through the Peruvian Child Development Assessment Test (TPED) scores, which were recorded in their respective medical records. The Chi-square test was applied, and the Odds Ratio was calculated to evaluate the potential association. RESULTS: It was found that the frequency of non-exclusive breastfeeding in children under 15 months with psychomotor development disorder was 54.4%, significantly higher than the 29.6% in children without the disorder. Bivariate analysis demonstrated that non-exclusive breastfeeding is a risk factor for psychomotor development disorder [OR = 2.837, 95% CI = (1.685 - 4.777), p = 0.001]. No statistically significant association was found between maternal and child sociodemographic characteristics and the presence of psychomotor development disorder in this study. CONCLUSION: Non-exclusive breastfeeding represents a risk factor for psychomotor development disorder in children under 15 months.
