Objective: To determine if in patients with varicose veins of the lower limbs, laser surgery is more effective than conventional surgery at the Central Military Hospital in the 2015-2018 period. Material and methods: The research is a retrospective cohort study with a population consisting of 142 patients who have undergone varicose vein surgery of the lower limbs, of which 71 were operated by conventional surgery and 71 by laser surgery at the Central Military Hospital in the period 2015 and 2018. For the analysis statistical tests were used establishing significant association if p is less than 0.5. Results: According to sex, the male represents 58.5%, the female 41.5%; The average age was 58.4 years. Regarding post-operative complications in laser surgery, hematomas, edema, saphenous nerve injury and infection were reported in 53.5%, 4.2%, 4.2%, 0% respectively and with conventional surgery 42.3%, 11.3%, 5.6 %, 0%, difference that was not significant. With postoperative pain in laser surgery it was found that it was of an intense character in 9.9% and tolerable in 90.1%, while in conventional surgery it was 8.5% and 91.5% respectively, a difference that was not significant. However, when evaluating the length of hospital stay, it was found that the average time of patients undergoing laser surgery (1.35 ± 0.66) is shorter than those who underwent conventional surgery (2.31 ± 0, 75), according to the T-Student statistical test, this difference is statistically significant (p <0.01). Conclusions: Laser surgery as well as conventional surgery offers similar characteristics, no statistical relevance was evidenced in terms of pain and immediate postoperative complications. On the hospital stay, laser surgery does offer greater advantages.
