Objective: To evaluate admission hyperglycemia as a factor associated with prolonged hospitalization in adults with acute myocardial infarction at the Santa Rosa Hospital - Piura during the period 2019-2021. Material and method: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on patients with acute myocardial infarction who were admitted to the internal medicine hospitalization service during the period 2019-2021. A total of 108 patients who met the selection criteria were studied at the Santa Rosa Hospital - Piura, distributed in a 1:1 ratio between exposed and unexposed. The frequency of hyperglycemia was analyzed in patients with and without prolonged hospital stay. Bivariate analysis was also performed using Chi-square for qualitative variables. The significant variables were then analyzed using Poisson logistic regression, adjusting for them. Results: Admission hyperglycemia was found to be associated with prolonged hospitalization in the bivariate analysis (p=0.001) with an RR of 3.77 (95% CI 1.64-8.68). However, it ceased to have statistical significance when it was included in the adjusted multivariate analysis. Other variables associated with prolonged hospitalization were also evaluated, including dyslipidemia with an RR of 1.79 and complications with an RR of 1.76. Conclusion: Admission hyperglycemia in patients with acute myocardial infarction is not associated with prolonged hospitalization. Dyslipidemia and complications were found to be factors associated with prolonged hospital stay.
