The purpose of this study was to compare the aesthetic self-perception of the facial profile in subjects with different maxillary positions. A prospective, cross-sectional, comparative and observational study was designed; with a sample of 80 subjects between 16 and 29 years of age (average: 20.75 +/- 2.80), 25 men (range: 17 to 27 years, average: 20.80 +/- 2.74) and 55 women (range: 16 a 29 years old: average: 20.73 +/- 2.74). Three groups were formed according to the position of the maxilla in relation to Element II, 20 with retrusion, 30 normal and 30 with protrusion. The aesthetic self-perception of the facial profile in smile was evaluated for each subject by means of the analog visual scale, valued from 0 to 10, where 0 indicated less attractive and 10 the maximum attractiveness that they could consider. A picture of a smiling facial profile was taken of each selected subject. Each photograph was shown to the same subject so that he re- evaluated his facial profile. The assessment of self-perception was also evaluated before visualizing his photograph. The results showed that no statistically significant differences were found between the self- perception ratings according to maxillary position (p>0.05). Statistically significant differences were found between the evaluations before and after viewing the photograph (p<0.05). It is concluded that there are no differences between the aesthetic self-perception of the facial profile in the smile in subjects with different position of the maxilla. The subjects were more critical about their own tractive before seeing their photograph.
