To demonstrate that hypocholesterolemia is a risk factor for mortality in adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on hemodialysis in a public hospital. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A retrospective cohort of 132 patients with CKD on hemodialysis attended at the hospital Victor Lazarte Echegaray in Trujillo from 2016 to 2021 was analyzed. The exposure factor evaluated was hypocholesterolemia and the outcome was all-cause mortality. The relative risk (RR) was determined by bivariate analysis applying the Chi-square test and was adjusted with related covariates by multivariate analysis using logistic regression analysis, in both cases the p-value and their 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated. RESULTS: Of the total of 132 patients, 66 had hypocholesterolemia, 66 without hypocholesterolemia, 70 died and 62 survived. Of the patients exposed to hypocholesterolemia 45 (68%) died and of the patients without hypocholesterolemia 25 (38%) died (p<0,000). The RR of mortality in patients with hypocholesterolemia was 1,8 (CI 95% 1,27-2,56). In the multivariate analysis, the factors associated with mortality were hypocholesterolemia with RR: 2,67 (CI 95% 1,14-6,25; p=0,023), anemia with RR: 3,09 (CI 95% 1,32-7,22; p=0,009), hypoalbuminemia with RR: 3,35 (CI 95% 1,42-7,93; p=0,006) and advanced age with RR: 2,67 (CI 95% 1,16-6,16; p=0,021). CONCLUSION: Hypocholesterolemia is a risk factor for mortality in adults with chronic kidney disease on hemodialysis
