Introduction: The elderberry fruit, being easily accessible and safe to use, is shown as a promising dietary supplement to improve cognitive response under stress and strengthen the body's antioxidant capacity. Objective: To evaluate the antioxidant effect of S. peruviana on spatial learning and memory in rats induced to hypothermic stress. Methods: Albino rats were divided into 3 groups: the control group (A1) and two experimental groups (A2 and A3). The aqueous extract of elderberry fruit was administered at doses of 105 and 210 mg (350 and 700 mg / kg) to each albino rat of group A2 and A3 respectively for a period of 20 days. Spatial learning and memory were assessed using the Morris labyrinth over 6 days. On day 7, hypothermic stress was induced with water at 8 ° C to assess the time it took each rat to get to the labyrinth platform and then, take blood samples to determine malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. Results: Groups A2 and A3 had low levels of MDA compared to A1 (p = 0.0000). However, results in spatial learning and memory evaluations did not show statistical significance even though group A2 showed better test times. Conclusions: The antioxidant effect of the aqueous extract of the S. peruviana’s fruit does not improve spatial memory and learning in rats induced to hypothermic stress.
