Objective: To determine if the short seep duration is a factor associated with the metabolic syndrome in adult workers. Material and methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2018 with 1000 participants, 600 men and 400 women, aged 20-60 years. The participants were categorized according to the sleep duration in short (≤ 6 hours) and adequate (7-8 hours). Metabolic syndrome was defined according to the criteria proposed by the modified Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP-III). A logistic regression analysis was performed, adjusted to the main confounding factors. Results: The average age was 39.9 years for men and 39.3 years for women. In general, 17% of participants had metabolic syndrome, (18% of men and 15.5% of women). The prevalence of short sleep duration was 35.29% for participants with metabolic syndrome and 24.69% for participants without this syndrome. Participants with short sleep had a significant increase in the probability of having metabolic syndrome (OR = 1.56, 95% CI 1.072 - 2.28) compared to participants who sleep properly, after adjusting for sex, age, marital status, provenance, type of work, physical inactivity and smoking (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The short duration of sleep (≤ 6 hours) is highly associated with metabolic syndrome. These results suggest that short sleep duration is another of the risk factors for the metabolic syndrome.
