Anxiety is an anticipatory response to some future threat, this may be related to criminal acts in people who are now in a prison. Objectives: To establish the association between anxiety and the motive for crime in prisoners in Peru. Materials and methods: An analytical cross-sectional study was carried out in a random sample of 753 inmates nationwide, who met the inclusion criteria. The data of interest (intervening, response and exposure variables) were collected from a database obtained through the First National Penitentiary Census of Peru; to measure the level of association, the Pearson's Rho test was used. Results: The results showed that the Pearson's Rho test found values greater than 0, which indicates that there is a positive association between anxiety, the intervening variables and the response variable. Conclusions: According to the diagnostic criteria of the DSM-V, 17.5% of the prison population suffers from anxiety. There is a relationship between anxiety and the motive for crime in prisoners along with social and family history.
