Pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience, being one of the main reasons for consultation in emergencies worldwide. Inadequate pain management has become a big problem, leading to unfavorable physical and psychological outcomes. Objective: To identify if the origin of the knowledge, the methodology used in the classes and the average study time are factors associated with the level of knowledge about pain management in 6th year medical students. Materials and methods: An observational, cross-sectional and analytical study was carried out. The sample consisted of 105 students of the sixth year of the medical career of the “Antenor Orrego Private University”, who were surveyed with the “Survey of Knowledge and Attitudes about Pain”, developed for the evaluation of knowledge and attitudes about pain in professionals of the health and students in the last year of the medical career. Results: The median age was 25 years with an intercurtil range of 3, in addition to 47, 6% were men, while 52.4% corresponded to women. 52% of the students presented a low level of knowledge about pain management, 39% a medium level and 9% a high level. A very significant association was found with the origin of knowledge about pain and a high level of knowledge about pain management <0.001. There is an association between the methodological strategy of teaching at the bedside of the patient used for knowledge about pain management, with a high level of knowledge (p 0.003). There is an association between a high level of knowledge about pain management and a mean study time greater than 6 hours (p <0.001). Conclusions: The origin of the extracurricular knowledge, the teaching at the patient's bedside and the average study time greater than 6 hours is a factor associated with a high level of knowledge about pain management
