Objective: To establish whether elevated glycosylated hemoglobinis a risk factor for ischemic heart disease in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Material and methods: An analytical, case-control study was carried out in which 120 patients with a diagnosis of diabetes mellitus were included, according to selection criteria which were divided according to the presence or not of ischemic heart disease. calculated the chi square and the odds ratio statistic. Results: The frequency of male sex and high body mass index were significantly higher in the group of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus with ischemic heart disease (p<0.05); the frequency of elevated glycosylated hemoglobin in diabetic patients with ischemic heart disease was 90%; the frequency of elevated glycosylated hemoglobin in diabetic patients without ischemic heart disease was 10%; Elevated glycosylated hemoglobin is a risk factor for ischemic heart disease in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus with an odds ratio of 6.65 which was significant (p<0.05); There is an association between higher levels of glycated hemoglobin and the appearance of ischemic heart disease in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (p<0.05); In the multivariate analysis, the variables: male sex, high body mass index and high glycosylated hemoglobin were identified as risk factors for ischemic heart disease in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (p<0.05). Conclusion: elevated glycated hemoglobin is a risk factor for ischemic heart disease in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus
