Determine if there is an association between personality traits and irritable bowel syndrome in users treated at the Regional Teaching Hospital of Trujillo. Material and methods: An analytical cross-sectional study was carried out. 180 patients treated in the outpatient clinic of the gastroenterology department of the Regional Teaching Hospital of Trujillo during the period 2023 were included. The brief personality questionnaire based on the CBP-LRC Big Five Factors was applied to them, in order to calculate in this way, the degree of each personality trait, such as openness to experience, extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and emotional instability. A bivariate and multivariate analysis of the variables in relation to irritable bowel syndrome was performed. Poisson regression was used to determine the direction of the association. Results: The high trait expressed with the highest prevalence in patients with irritable bowel syndrome was emotional instability (76.7%), while the low trait expressed with the highest prevalence was extraversion (43.3%). The variables that showed an association with irritable bowel syndrome were High Openness to Experience (PRa: 2.041; 95% CI: 1.462 - 2.848; p<0.001), Low Extraversion (PR: 1.687; 95% CI: 1.281 - 2.223 ; p<0.001), High emotional instability (PR 2.406; 95% CI: 1.678 – 3.447), Age (PR: 0.982; 95% CI: 0.974 – 0.990; p<0.001) and Obesity (PR: 1.659; CI 95%: 1.300 – 2.119; p<0.001). Conclusions: High openness to experience, low extraversion, high emotional instability are related to irritable bowel syndrome
