To determine if the decreased mean platelet volume is a risk factor for preterm delivery in pregnant women with threatened preterm delivery at Hospital Belén de Trujillo. Material and methods: A retrospective analytical cohort study was carried out with a group of 100 pregnant women included, who, according to selection criteria, were separated into 2 subgroups: pregnant women with decreased mean platelet volume and pregnant women with normal mean platelet volume; Subsequently, the relative risk and the chi square statistical test were used. Results: There were no significant differences regarding the variables age, origin, multiparity, and tocolytic treatment among pregnant women with decreased or normal mean platelet volume. A relative risk of 2.33 was obtained, which was significant (p<0.05), demonstrating that the decreased mean platelet volume is a risk factor for preterm birth. In the multivariate analysis, the variables obesity, inadequate prenatal control and inadequate platelet volume were identified as risk factors for preterm delivery in pregnant women. Conclusion: Decreased mean platelet volume is a risk factor for preterm delivery in pregnant women with threatened preterm delivery at Hospital Belén de Trujillo.
