Objective: To establish if metabolic syndrome (MetS) is an associated factor to female genetic alopecia (FGA) in outpatients treated in the dermatology department of “Hospital La Noria”. Material and methods: We conducted a case-control study that included 70 patients, 35 controls and 35 patients with FGA who met the selection´s criteria and were selected by simple random sampling. The comparison of variables between both groups of study was carried out using T student test for means and Chi-square test for proportions. Odds ratio with 95% confidence interval was calculated. Statistical significance was considered if p <0.05. Results: The frequency of the metabolic syndrome among the 70 participants was 29 (41.4%), 19 (54.3%) in the case group and 10 (28.6%) in the control group. The association between the study variables was significant (p = 0.029) and the OR for FGA was 2.97 (CI: 1.103 - 7.99) in patients with MetS. Conclusions: Metabolic syndrome is an associated factor for female genetic alopecia.
