Objective: The objective of this study was to determine whether there is an association between eosinopenia and mortality in patients treated with COVID-19 pneumonia at the Virgen de la Puerta Alta Complexity Hospital. Materials and methods: A retrospective cohort observational study was carried out on patients with moderate to severe pneumonia due to COVID-19 treated in the intensive care unit service of the Hospital Alta Complejidad Virgen de la Puerta, during the period March 2020 to December 2021. the diagnosis of pneumonia due to COVID-19, to later distinguish the patients whose record reports a history of eosinopenia and verifying whether they died or survived. Results: The study included a total of 272 patients with moderate or severe pneumonia due to COVID-19, and it was observed that, among the 136 patients with eosinopenia, 25.7% died, and 74.3% survived, while of the 136 patients without eosinopenia, 40.4% % died, and 59.6% survived, proving that eosinopenia has statistical significance with (p 0.010) with a RR 0.636 (95% CI 0.448-0.904), inferring that 36.4% had a lower probability of death. Conclusions: Eosinopenia is a factor associated with mortality in patients hospitalized in the ICU with moderate or severe pneumonia due to COVID-19 treated at the Virgen de la Puerta Alta Complexity Hospital.
