INTRODUCTION: Retinopathy of prematurity (RP), is one of the most prevalent causes of blindness in premature newborns (RN), identifying the factors that precipitate or promote it would help prevent it. OBJECTIVE: To determine if thrombocytopenia is a risk factor for retinopathy of prematurity at the Trujillo Regional Teaching Hospital (HRDT). MATERIAL AND METHOD: It is a case-control study where 236 clinical histories of NR (59 with RP and 177 without RP), hospitalized in the HRDT between 2011 and 2017, were analyzed, analyzing the platelet value within the first two weeks of birth. The Odds ratio and Odds ratio adjusted by multivariate analysis were calculated by establishing the risk of RP independently. RESULTS: Gestational age ≤ 32 weeks (OR: 4.63), turn OFF at 5 minutes (OR: 4.59), birth weight <1500 grams (OR: 5.99), prolonged oxygen therapy (OR: 10.44), transfusion (OR : 2.79) and plaquetopenia (OR: 3.35), were associated with RP in the bivariate analysis, however only the low APGAR (ORa: 2.45), the low weight (ORa: 3.49) and the platelet (ORa: 4.02) were maintained Associated independently in multivariate analysis. CONCLUSION: Thrombocytopenia is a risk factor for retinopathy of prematurity at the Trujillo Regional Teaching Hospital.
