OBJECTIVE: Identify differences in colostrum cell count of mothers with and without risk factors for neonatal infection METHOD: A cross-sectional analytical observational study was carried out, in which 61 colostrum samples from mothers without risk factors for neonatal infection and 47 colostrum samples from mothers with risk factors for neonatal infection were evaluated; Using Papanicolau (PAP) staining, neutrophils, lymphocytes and macrophages were identified and a respective count of each cell evaluated was performed. RESULTS: There is a significant difference in the count of neutrophils (p=0.000), macrophages (p=0.030) and lymphocytes (p=0.000), in the colostrum of mothers with and without risk factors for neonatal infection. The mean neutrophil count presented the greatest significant difference between both groups, having a mean of 167 in the colostrum of mothers with risk factors for neonatal infection vs 112 in the colostrum of mothers without risk factors for neonatal infection, followed by mean lymphocyte count which was 20 in the colostrum of mothers with risk factors for neonatal infection vs. 13 in the colostrum of mothers without risk factors for neonatal infection and the macrophage count which had a mean of 14 in the colostrum of mother with risk factors for neonatal infection vs 12 in the colostrum of mother without risk factors for neonatal infection CONCLUSION There are significant differences in the count of neutrophils, macrophages and lymphocytes in the colostrum of mothers with and without risk factors for neonatal infection
