OBJECTIVE: To determine that type 2 diabetes mellitus is a factor associated with decreased lung function in diabetic patients treated at the Hospital Belen de Trujillo during the period April - November 2019. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study corresponding to an observational, cross-sectional analytical design, where 132 patients treated in the endocrinology and internal medicine external office area from the Hospital Belen de Trujillo during the period April - November 2019 were included. Patients were asked for spirometry and a data collection sheet was also used for further analysis. RESULTS: In this study, of the 132 patients, 66 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and 66 were patients without this disease. Of the 66 patients who had DM2, 32 (48%) decreased lung function and the remaining 34 (52%) did not present; on the other hand, of the non-diabetic patients, 8 (12%) decreased lung function and the remaining 58 (88%) did not present. At the same time, a prevalence odds ratio of 6,824 (95% CI = 2,822-16,498) was obtained with p <0.001 demonstrating association between diabetes mellitus and decreased lung function. CONCLUSIONS: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a factor associated with decreased lung function.
