Objective: Determine the effectiveness of the NRS 2002 Test as a screening tool in the assessment of Nutritional Risk in pre-surgical adult patients of the General Surgery Service of the Central Military Hospital of Lima during the period June - December 2019. Material and method: A cohort analytic study, non-experimental, of longitudinal type, was designed to be carried out in the General Surgery service of the Central Military Hospital “Luis Arias Schreiber” of Lima, where all the patients admitted in the General Surgery service, during the period June – December 2019, and that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria, were taken as the study population. Results: The prevalence of malnutrition risk obtained by applying the NRS 2002 and the VGS (or SGA, by its acronym in English) was of 73% and 71%, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity obtained for NRS 2002 was of 97.2% and 85.2%, as well as the VPP (PPV, by its acronym in English) was of 94.2% and the VPN (NPV, by its acronym in English) was of 92.6%. There is an association between the risk of malnutrition and the occurrence of postoperative complications (OR: 5.683, CI: 95%). Likewise, there is a 93% of probability that the NRS 2002 Test correctly classify a patient as Safe or At Risk of Malnutrition. The results indicate an almost perfect agreement, that is, the results obtained by applying the NRS 2002 Test largely replicate those obtained by the VGS. Conclusion: The NRS 2002 nutritional screening Test is effective in order to correctly assess patients as well-nourish or at risk of malnutrition.
